GCVA League Rules
1. Be On Time. Game time can is at the hour. You will be notified of
match times before first league night. Game time is forfeit time for the first
game if your team if not ready to play. The next game in the match is forfeited
30 minutes after the official start time. Official time is Ref.'s watch or
league official’s watch. You can make up games later on other nights if both
teams agree. If not a forfeit will be in effect.
2. Take only 5 minutes to warm up, if more time is needed please come
early or warm up on the side. Remember not only the other team is waiting on
you the next two teams are waiting for the court. Your match is over at the hour and the other
teams have the court weather you finished or not.
3. If you no show you will be given one warning, the next time you
will forfeit the league (and all fees) and we will get another team
to take your place.
4. Each match will consist of 2 (15) point games. For 4's and 6's, 1 (11) and 1 (15) point games for Doubles. All matches have to
be finished at 55 minutes past the hour. This will allow a 5-minute warm up
period. If more time is need for warm-ups do it prior to your match.
5. All playoff matches will be the best 1 Game to 15. The best 2 out
of 3 (to 11) may be substituted for the finals or in any other round if time
permits. The first playoff match will be at 7:00 each additional match will
start 10 minutes after the previous.
6. Every team is encouraged to keep a list of alternates. We do not
want anyone to forfeit. Some people are coming a long ways. They would rather
play, so if you cannot make it please have someone in mind. Alternates can be
added to roster up until playoffs. It is encouraged that in doubles at least
one original member be in the playoffs. Whatever team starts the playoffs must
finish.
7. No Cleats, personal stereos, bracelets or watches or any other
objects that could injure other players or your self.
8. All players must sign a waver and be on the official roster.
9.
The park closes at 10:30. That is when
the gates are locked. You must exit the park before 10:30 PM.
OFFICIAL RULES GOVERNING THE USE OF THE COURTS (New for
'05!):
Due to some past safety and maintenance
concerns, the City has adopted, and will be posting, "official"
rules governing the use of the courts in '05. Here's a partial preview:
1. NO PETS will be allowed inside the fenced volleyball area.
2. NO UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN will be allowed inside the
fenced volleyball area.
3. ALL NON-PLAYERS (spectators, supervised children), once
inside the fence, must stay on the bleacher side of the complex, a
safe distance away from the playing area.
4. NO GLASS may be brought into the Sportsplex.
5. NO parking, loading, unloading in Handicap Parking,
without proper ID. Violators will be ticketed, fined ($200),
and subject to tow.
GENERAL
Setting: A hand set ball must be contacted and released simultaneously with both
hands and may not visually come to rest or be carried. Rotation shall not be an
automatic determination of a ball-handling foul, however in League Doubles the
ball should not rotate more than twice. Overhand Over-sets must cross the plane
of the net parallel to your shoulders in a forward or backward direction or it
is considered a misdirection of the ball. No exceptions including the wind. A
point or SIDEOUT will be awarded for overhand over-sets that do not cross the
plane of the net parallel to the setter's shoulders. Bump sets can be
over-setting.
Serve: The server may not step on or touch the end line in any way, or
contact the playing surface until the ball is contacted. He/she may however
break the imaginary plane above the end line as long as he/she has contacted
the ball before touching the playing surface (i.e. jump serves). You can serve
anywhere behind the line. You cannot
receive a serve open-handed, hands must be together. The ball cannot contact the palm of your
hands when receiving the serve even if they are together.
Attack or Block: You cannot block a ball on the opponent’s side of the net unless
the opponents have either already completed 3 contacts or are trying to take
the ball over. You can never spike the ball on the opponent’s side of the net;
you may however contact the ball above the plane of the net or on your side of
the net and follow through to your opponent's side of the net. The block does not count as a team contact in coed 4’s. You may not block or attack a serve. Note: In doubles AVP rules are in effect, the block does count as a team contact
but either player can contact the ball after the block (There are only 2 more
contacts after the block).
Double Hit: You may only double hit a hard driven ball
as long as it is one attempt at playing the ball (the serve is never considered
a hard driven ball) Open Hand Digs (BEACH DIGS) are allowed as long as the ball
is spiked from above the net. The ball should not come to rest or visually
caught and thrown. The GCVA is very liberal on beach digs as long as it is a
hard spiked ball from above the net.
Dinks: Open Hand dinks will not be allowed in Doubles and CoEd 4's. You must attack the ball. You may however use a
backhand, Cobra, or close fist. The ball cannot contact the palm of the hand
for the purpose of misdirecting the ball. The ball may only touch the palm of
the hand if the player is swinging at or attacking the ball. Open hand dinks are allowed in coed 6's.
Center Line: A player may cross-center while playing the ball as long as the
player does not interfere with the opponent. Interference is not necessary
determined by contact. You cannot touch the net with any part of your body or
clothing. Hair in the net is not a violation.
Boundaries: The ball must travel between the imaginary extensions of the poles.
If any part of the ball contacts the pole or passes over the vertical extension
of the pole, it is out of play. Players may not use the poles or any part of
the court or other players to help propel him into the air. The player may use
the poles to stop him from contacting the net once he has made his play.
COED Quads: There cannot be more than 2 males on the court at any time. Players
may play any position but must rotate serve. A female player must contact the
ball if the ball more is contacted more than once on that side. If sub's come
in a male must come in for a male, female for female i.e..
If you start a game with 3 females and 1 male and a
additional male shows up later, the male player cannot come in for a female,
but can sub in for the 1 male player.
Sixes: There must be a minimum of two males and two females on the court
at all times. Players must be separated male, female to the best of their
ability. Players must rotate after each SIDEOUT. If two female players are in
the front, a male can come up to block; he cannot attack the ball unless it is
from behind the 10 ‘ line. Players leaving the game
may not re-enter until the next game unless it is a rotation type substitution.
